Long time ago, a man—after I had pointed out the contradictions in his behavior (a married man who somehow “desired” me, while expecting me to quietly accept a situation that felt profoundly unfair)—decided to take upon himself the burden of counting my wrinkles, my “horrible” breasts, my stretch marks, and every supposedly disgusting layer of cellulite.

My only request had been simple: to be honest and respectful—towards me, and towards the woman he was still living with.

For a while, I looked at myself through the lenses and the cold precision of a forensic examiner.

Every wrinkle became evidence.
Every stretch mark became a flaw.
Every sign of a life lived became something to apologize for.

Then I realized that the problem had never been my body.

The problem was allowing someone else’s lens to become my mirror.

Beauty has very little to do with smooth skin, perfect breasts, the absence of wrinkles, grey hair, or stretch marks. Those things are simply the marks left by living.

Real beauty shines from the inside out.

When I wrote “Mirror of Scars,” I was thinking about every person who has ever looked in the mirror and seen someone else’s criticism staring back.

There are many Wizards of Oz in this world—people convinced that their distorted lens should become your truth.

It doesn’t have to.

Sometimes the bravest thing we can do is clean the mirror, hand back their lens, and finally see ourselves through our own eyes.
