As we navigate the ever-evolving world, there are countless ways that technology intertwines with tradition. Being a music director in a Methodist church is an honor and a responsibility, as music is a fundamental aspect of our worship. This season, I embarked on an unconventional path: I decided to employ Artificial Intelligence (AI) to brainstorm musical ideas and repertoire for our chimes and choir ensemble.
Why AI?
In this digital age, AI is transforming various industries, and surprisingly, the world of music isn’t untouched. AI can analyze vast amounts of data, learn from user inputs, and suggest ideas based on patterns it recognizes. I was curious to see how this technology could enhance the traditional musical choices we make and perhaps introduce fresh perspectives.
The Process
Using OpenAI’s platform, I engaged in a detailed discussion with an AI model about our chimes and choir’s specifics: the number of members, our meeting frequency, and the occasions we perform. I expressed our desire for both traditional pieces that resonate with our congregation’s spirit and some unexpected selections to refresh our musical journey.
The AI, drawing from a vast database of musical knowledge, provided a myriad of suggestions. For instance, our chimes ensemble received recommendations like “Bridge Over Troubled Water” and the serene “In Dolce Jubilo” — choices I hadn’t previously considered for a church setting. Meanwhile, for our choir, the AI introduced me to the ethereal “Stars” by Ēriks Ešenvalds, a modern choral piece complemented by the sound of tuned water glasses, creating a shimmering, celestial soundscape.
The Outcome
Incorporating these unexpected pieces into our repertoire has been both a challenge and a joy. While AI does not replace the human touch and understanding of our congregation’s unique spirit, it offered a rich tapestry of musical ideas and unconventional, unique choices. It was like having a collaborative brainstorming session with a seasoned musical scholar- besides myself.
Our upcoming musical season will be a blend of these AI-inspired choices with our beloved classics, bringing forth the best of both worlds — the timeless grace of our traditional music and the invigorating essence of new inspirations.
Reflection
The experience of integrating AI in church music planning was eye-opening. It emphasized that while our roots lie in tradition, there’s always room for innovation. The AI was aware of the Methodist tradition rooted in hymnals and of the spirit of Christmas and Easter. This innovation can come from the most unexpected places, reminding us that music is an ever-evolving art form.
As we forge ahead, I’m thrilled to explore how we can further meld technology with our worship.
